Introduction
Kerala has a habit of making travellers slow down. Not because the roads are winding (although they certainly are), but because every few kilometres there's another view demanding your attention.
Our 5 Days 4 Nights family trip through Munnar and Thekkady was supposed to be a simple mountain getaway. Instead, it turned into one of those journeys where the photographs become treasured memories and the landscapes quietly stay with you long after returning home. Between mist-covered tea estates, endless rolling hills, wildlife encounters, scenic jeep rides, and countless cups of Kerala tea, we discovered why this part of God's Own Country continues to be one of India's most loved family destinations. And yes, apparently walking thousands of steps uphill while calling it a holiday is perfectly normal these days.

Day 1 — Into the Clouds: Arrival in Munnar ☁️
The journey into Munnar feels like entering a different world. As the plains gradually disappear behind you, the roads begin climbing through dense forests, waterfalls, spice plantations and tea-covered hills. Our first glimpse of Munnar was exactly what every traveller secretly hopes for—rolling green mountains stretching endlessly into the horizon. Standing at one of the panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley, we watched layers of hills disappear into the distance under soft clouds.
"This is why people drive hundreds of kilometres for a mountain view."
As seen in the photograph overlooking the vast green valleys, the landscape felt almost cinematic.

Highlights
- Scenic drive through Western Ghats
- Valley viewpoints
- Tea-covered mountains
- Fresh mountain air
Practical Observation
Arriving before sunset is highly recommended. Munnar's evening light transforms the hills into different shades of green and blue.
Day 2 — Tea Gardens, Hidden Roads & Family Moments 🌿
No visit to Munnar is complete without immersing yourself in its tea country. The morning began with winding roads cutting through endless tea plantations. Workers could be seen carefully tending tea bushes that have shaped Munnar's economy and identity for generations. The beauty of Munnar isn't found only at famous viewpoints. Sometimes it's found on an empty road, beside a tea estate, where you stop simply because the scenery refuses to let you drive further. One of the most memorable moments was spending time together surrounded by Kerala's natural beauty, with green hills rising behind us and a bright blue sky overhead. The vibrant family photograph with the classic red vehicle perfectly captures the spirit of slow travel—less rushing, more experiencing.

Family Travel Insight
Children often enjoy the open landscapes far more than crowded tourist attractions. Munnar provides plenty of space for exploration and imagination.
Day 3 — Off-Road Adventures & Hidden Munnar 🚙
Some of Munnar's most beautiful locations lie beyond the standard tourist circuit. This was our adventure day. Travelling through remote mountain trails revealed a quieter side of Kerala—misty hills, untouched meadows and viewpoints where the only sounds came from birds and distant winds. The atmosphere became even more dramatic as clouds rolled down the mountains. Standing in front of these giant green slopes felt humbling.
And naturally, when presented with a breath-taking landscape, the only logical family response was jumping into the air for photographs. As seen in the image, the mountain backdrop created one of our favourite memories from the trip.

Adventure Experiences
- Off-road jeep rides
- Hidden hill viewpoints
- Nature photography
- Mountain exploration
Lesser-Known Fact
The Western Ghats surrounding Munnar are recognised as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots.
Day 4 — Thekkady & The Wilderness Experience 🐘
Leaving Munnar behind, we headed towards Thekkady. The landscape gradually changed from tea-covered mountains to dense forests and spice plantations. Thekkady is famous for its wildlife reserves, particularly the Periyar region, where nature takes centre stage. Unlike many tourist destinations, Thekkady rewards patience. You don't come here for fast entertainment. You come here to listen to forests, watch birds, smell cardamom plantations and appreciate silence.
One of our peaceful family moments happened near an open meadow surrounded by forest landscapes.

Experiences Worth Trying
- Periyar Lake boating
- Spice plantation tours
- Nature walks
- Bamboo rafting
- Wildlife spotting
Local Culture
Thekkady's economy revolves around spices. Cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and cloves fill the air with incredible aromas.
Day 5 — Farewell Kerala: One Last View 🌄
Every memorable journey deserves a strong ending. Before beginning our return journey, we stopped one final time to admire Kerala's mountains. The view stretched endlessly across forested ridges and mist-covered valleys. Standing quietly at the edge of the viewpoint, it was impossible not to reflect on how quickly five days had passed. Travel often gives us photographs.
Occasionally, it gives perspective. This final viewpoint did both. The photograph looking across Kerala's magnificent mountain ranges perfectly symbolises the end of our journey.

Some trips are about ticking destinations off a list. Others become family stories. Our journey through Munnar and Thekkady was filled with mountain views, laughter, spontaneous photo sessions, scenic drives and those small moments that rarely appear on itineraries but become the most memorable parts of travel. From misty valleys and tea plantations to forest adventures and breathtaking viewpoints, Kerala reminded us that the best journeys aren't measured in kilometres travelled, but in memories collected.
